Making the Switch: PC to Mac

November 7, 2007

During the last 6 months, I have been using a Mac G4 in my office at Flower Publishing. At first I was in a bit of a shock. But like any “early adopter”, it came easy. I love using all of the programs, plug-ins, and the usability of the machine itself.

It wasn’t the nifty commercials and it definitely was not the price difference.

After work I would get home and use my Sony Vaio laptop (that I love) and type in the wrong codes for “copy/paste”, forget about the right click function, etc. Basically, I could not use both PC and Mac in one day.

There are many things I find easier to do on Macs. The main thing being multitasking. The dock alone makes it easier for me to know what is going on at all times. It helps me to remember all windows and programs I have going on. I am infamous for starting a project and forgetting I had it open until the moment I shut down.

Secondly, with all the reviews I have been reading about Apple’s new operating system, Leopard, I am eager to try it out. Leopard reviews are flooding in, and they are all positive. Of course I will wait until my birthday to get probably a G5 Powerbook Pro, but it will give me enough time to research as much as possible.

According to this article that I found on the TUAW (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) : PC Mag gives the OS a whopping 4.5 out of 5: “Leopard performs all such tasks even better than previous versions did-and Leopard is the only OS on the planet that works effortlessly and intuitively in today’s world of networked computers and peripherals. Leopard is far from perfect, but it’s better than any alternative, and it’s getting harder and harder to find good reasons to use anything else.”

This is difficult for me because I have been using PC’s since I was 12 years old. I had my very own PC at the age of 14 and have gone through 3 since then. But I think this might be the right direction for me.

I am going to purchase a G5 powerbook because I need to:

  • Organize Clients
  • Organize design ideas
  • Carry around a lighter laptop
  • Increase work flow
  • Work more from home
  • Record music in my studio
  • Sit in Starbucks with my hot new G5 (just kidding)

If anyone is currently using Mac’s Leopard and would like to send me advice. Or if anyone has ever made the big switch from PC to Mac and would like to send more advice.. My Eyes and Ears are Wide open!

There are a ton of switching guides on various blogs like this one on LifeHacker, but more knowledge is greatly appreciated.
